Who is Eligible?
Canadian homeowners can apply for the grant, as long as they can prove that they live in the home that is being renovated. Landlords who live off-site, for example, are not eligible. Single-family or semi-detached homes, row houses, townhomes, winterized cottages, and certain houseboats and mobile homes qualify. New homes and high-rise condominiums do not qualify. Indigenous organizations, such as band councils and housing bodies, are eligible for the grant. So, if you are the owner of a home that may need an insulation pick-me-up, now is the time to think about it. You may save a lot of money.
Before you apply, know that you will not receive the grant upfront. The grant is a reimbursement for work that has already been done. Homeowners must undergo an energy audit first, then invest in the upgrades and be audited again – all at their own expense. Once those upgrades have been certified, the government will reimburse the homeowners with as much as $5,600, about a month later. The amount reimbursed will depend on the final energy audit.
