How the Greener Homes Grant Will Help You Save on Insulation

The Canadian government has recently introduced the Canada Greener Homes Grant in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Eligible homeowners can receive up to $5,600 in grants to make energy efficient retrofits to their homes. This includes new insulation, solar panels, foundation waterproofing, windows, doors, and more. Renovating the home is not only good for the planet but your wallet, too. Re-insulating the attic can save you up to 30% on your heating costs. To apply, visit the government of Canada’s website and register to the Greener Homes program. Who is Eligible?

Canadian homeowners can apply for the grant, as long as they can prove that they live in the home that is being renovated. Landlords who live off-site, for example, are not eligible. Single-family or semi-detached homes, row houses, townhomes, winterized cottages, and certain houseboats and mobile homes qualify. New homes and high-rise condominiums do not qualify. Indigenous organizations, such as band councils and housing bodies, are eligible for the grant. So, if you are the owner of a home that may need an insulation pick-me-up, now is the time to think about it. You may save a lot of money.

Before you apply, know that you will not receive the grant upfront. The grant is a reimbursement for work that has already been done. Homeowners must undergo an energy audit first, then invest in the upgrades and be audited again – all at their own expense. Once those upgrades have been certified, the government will reimburse the homeowners with as much as $5,600, about a month later. The amount reimbursed will depend on the final energy audit.

How Does Attic Insulation Affect Energy Efficiency?

Insulation provides a barrier between the interior of the home and the outside, allowing you to keep a desired temperature year-round. As air flows naturally from warm areas to cold, the air in your home is constantly trying to mix with the air outside. During the winter, the warm air inside the home tries to escape, and in the summer, the warm air outside tries to reach the colder air indoors. Keeping the temperature of the home stable therefore decreases your energy costs. Your HVAC system will not have to work hard to manage the temperature of the house.
